Year 2017 is the Chinese year of the Red Fire Rooster.
Chinese New Year's Day is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. Also known as the Lunar New Year, it will be celebrated around the world starting on Friday, January
27th 2017. It is the eve of the Lunar New Year. The festival officially begins on Saturday, January 28th. On this day, you will see many wearing new clothes from head to
toe, to symbolise a new start and fresh hopes for the year. Chinese New Year celebrations traditionally end with a Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the Lunar Year, or
on the February 11th. The two week celebration will welcome in the year of the Rooster.
Chinese New Year is traditionally marked with the giving of gifts and celebrations with family, as well as looking to what the sign of the Rooster will mean for the year
ahead. Usually there will also be firecrackers, orange or tangerines and give away of ang pau (hongbao) or red packets during this festival. The lucky colour, red, and
other bright colours will be worn, to go with the upbeat and festive mood. Dragon and lion dances will be performed, as it is traditionally believed that such dances are a
way to pray for good luck and drive away evil spirits. Chinese homes will be decorated with lanterns of all sizes, cherry blossoms, pussy willows and Spring Festival
Couplets or Chunlian.
In China, New Year's Eve is seen as an important date, with families gathering together for a reunion dinner over an extravagant meal with lots of noise and laughter.
During this 'getting-rid-of evening', one will be able to see all sorts of dishes on the table including the traditional Yee Sang, leek, sticky cake and candies served in
the tray of togetherness. Firecrackers are then let off to signal the end of last year and the beginning of next. On the first Chinese New Year's Day, it is the day of
close family visits and exchanging New Year greetings.
Why Chinese New Year Is Celebrated? There are many legends about the Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year's Day is called Guo Nian (过年) in Chinese, which can mean 'celebrate
(a new) year' or 'overcome Nian'.
